About the HIP Pilot Programme

What is the HIP programme?

We know the influx of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) are revolutionising clinical and working practices across health and care. As a consequence, those charged with leading transformation and change must be equipped to horizon-scan, understand and evaluate new innovations and best practice.

The Health Innovation Placement (HIP) is a new Health Education England Digital Readiness Education Programme offering which is aligned with the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme and is delivered by Anglia Ruskin University. It provides leaders with an exciting opportunity to develop through exposure with start-ups / small- medium enterprises (SMEs) and to work on the development of a technological solution to a specific NHS problem. The HIP aims to improve participants' understanding of digital development to enable them to lead, improve and transform the healthcare system by extracting the maximum opportunities from technology.

This year-long pilot is convening alongside the Clinical Entrepreneur Programme, which began in February 2022. The commitment is part-time and will include access to a number of offerings throughout the year including over 100 hours of direct education events with complementary workshops/ masterclasses; placement time in SMEs; tailored leadership training; and support from a range of mentors.

Who is it for?

The HIP pilot is targeted at an initial cohort of 10 - 20 clinical and non-clinical leaders from across the NHS who operate within a context and in a role where - either now or in the future - they are required to drive and implement practical transformational change within their organisation or system.

Appplicants keen to broaden their experience need not be board level but they should be able to demonstrate personal and professional credibility and have demonstrable leadership ability. They should have a track record of taking the initiative and should have been exposed to the delivery of successful (or unsuccessful!) projects in the past. They will bring with them diversity of thought and, specifically, a transformational challenge in their workplace that they are invested in and motivated to overcome.
